An AI citation tracker records, for a fixed query set, whether a generative answer appears, whether your brand is named, and whether your domain is linked as a source—Search Console does not store that third field by itself.
TLDR
Google’s Generative AI performance report counts impressions when links to your site show in AI Overviews or AI Mode—not a full citation ledger.
Log three columns per query: Overview present (yes/no), mention, citation (your host in the source list).
ChatGPT search visibility is a different gate: allow OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI crawlers).
This site skill is a measurement playbook (no CLI SKILL.md in the product repo). Do not invent a binary that is not in GitHub.
A tracker that only says “you appeared in AI” is marketing. The minimum schema:
Field
Meaning
query
Exact prompt / search string
engine
google-aio / google-ai-mode / chatgpt-search / other
feature_present
Did a generative block render?
brand_mentioned
Name in the synthesized text
domain_cited
Your host in the visible source list
cited_url
Canonical page if shown
checked_at
ISO timestamp
Citation rate = events where domain_cited is true / events where feature_present is true. Mention rate uses brand_mentioned. Keep the rates on your query sample. Do not paste industry-wide percentages from competitor blogs.
Google documents the Generative AI performance report as impression data for AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, or device. That is the only first-party time series most sites have.
What it does not claim: a list of queries where you were cited but not clicked. Google’s AI optimization guide points publishers to this report for visibility, then back to ordinary SEO quality systems. Use Search generative AI control only when you intend to change inclusion.
Run an audit skill if pages that should be eligible are not indexed or are noindex.
Google Overviews retrieve from the Search index (RAG + query fan-out in the official guide). ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. Mixing those logs produces fake “AI SEO scores.”
Keep crawl policy correct: Googlebot allowed for Overviews; OAI-SearchBot allowed for ChatGPT search. Training opt-outs (GPTBot, Google-Extended) are separate—see robots.txt for AI bots.
Run the site skill as a prompt library
seo-ai-citations exists as a site capability (prompt + logging contract). The product repo does not ship a matching skills/seo-ai-citations/SKILL.md. Agents should:
For each row in queries.csv:
1. Open the engine with a clean session.
2. Fill feature_present, brand_mentioned, domain_cited, cited_url.
3. Write JSONL. Never invent GSC impression counts.
npx @seoskillsai/cli run seo-ai-citations --target "https://example.com"
That CLI line is the universal runner used across this directory. If the pack has no skill folder, the agent must stop and use the GSC + spreadsheet method above. Browse the Skills directory for modules that do have repo SKILL.md files.
FAQ
What is an AI citation tracker?
Software or a spreadsheet that logs generative-answer presence, brand mentions, and source-link citations for a fixed query set.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overview citations?
It shows impressions for links displayed in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is not a complete citation-without-click log.
How do I track brand mentions in AI Overviews?
Sample queries, expand the Overview, and record brand_mentioned separately from domain_cited.
What is citation rate vs mention rate?
Citation rate uses source links to your host. Mention rate uses the brand string in the answer text.
How to measure AI Overview visibility?
Start with the GSC generative AI report, then add a query-level citation log for the pages that matter.
Measure Google with GSC impressions plus a citation/mention log; measure ChatGPT search only where OAI-SearchBot is allowed. Search ai citation tracker seoskillsai when you need this playbook again.
